Negril, Jamaica is renowned as a small, relaxed resort on one of the Caribbean's most beautiful islands. Negril itself has a spectacular coastline including a world famous seven mile white sand beach. It is a wonderful place to unwind and restore the soul. Negril is vibrant, brought alive by the Jamaican people, their music and a sultry climate that invites a leisurely way of life.
For 25 years Barbara Benagh and John Schumacher have welcomed yoga students to join them for one or two weeks of yoga in Negril. The yoga vacation they have created offers students the opportunity to explore in depth two distinctly different approaches to yoga. But the vacation is more than that.
It is an occasion for people who enjoy yoga and the exotic rhythm of Jamaica to get together with old friends (we have a 50-70% return rate each year), make new ones and simply have a good time.
All of our courses are for students who have previous Hatha Yoga experience.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Yoga classes, meals and most accommodations are at a small comfortable cliffside hotel located at the water's edge. Each room has two double beds, an ocean-facing balcony, air conditioning and phone. There is cliffside swimming and a pool. The sand beach is a short drive away. The vacation includes a vegetarian buffet breakfast daily, Monday evening appetizers and a dinner party on Saturday. Other meals are available at many local restaurants, which offer a wide range of cuisine including vegetarian and excellent fresh seafood.
THE TEACHERS
John Schumacher is one of the most prominent and respected teachers in The United States. He is a long time pupil of B.K.S. Iyengar and a senior certified teacher in that method. He is the director of Unity Woods Yoga Center, the largest Iyengar yoga center in the country. John is a contributing editor for Yoga Journal Magazine. The clarity, humor and directness that John incorporates in his teaching help to guide students toward experiencing the richness and vitality that are possible through the practice of yoga.
Barbara Benagh's innovative teaching style draws from many traditions. A teacher since 1974, she employs evocative language and conscious breathing to encourage an internal approach to yoga. She teaches patience and faith in creating a yoga practice that is economical, energizing and elegant. Barbara teaches at The Yoga Studio in Boston. She is a contributing editor for Yoga Journal Magazine and is its 2001 Asana Columnist
Barbara and John demonstrate how diverse interpretations of Hatha Yoga can be respectful and complimentary in a way that inspires students to create a self-expressive practice. For more information, call 617.566.1489
